Starting High School DHSVAD organises Year 6 visits and the Induction Program for the students. All of these events are designed to help the student become more familiar about what to expect in high school. For the parents there are Information Evenings where you can find out about welfare and discipline, student progress and other important information. Interpreters are available. These meetings are held in November. There is a Year 7 Student Advisor at DHSVAD who is responsible for the students. Students and parents can see this teacher if they have any problems or questions to discuss.

Primary - High Liaison Program Year 6 students from the local primary schools and beyond are given the opportunity to participate in various classroom activities at DHSVAD at particular times throughout the year. During these visits, students become more aware about how the high school is organised and the type of subjects that they will be studying. Year 7 Induction Program All students in Year 7 complete a 3 week induction program that enables them to become familiar with the operation of high school and its expectations and highlights the facilities available to them. Before starting the usual Year 7 coursework they will have the opportunity to tell their teachers and the other students about themselves and also to find out about each other. They will learn who to contact for support, the school rules, study skills, how to use their homework diary, and co-operative learning. They will also be introduced to the library and do research assignments and taught how to to use the computers. At the end of the 3 week program there is a picnic and also a presentation ceremony where each student is presented with an induction certificate, celebrating their successful transition to high school and their folder of work. Year 7 & 8 Portfolios Students in Years 7 and 8 produce portfolios of work samples from all of their subject areas. These portfolios are sent home for parents to be informed of their child’s progress throughout the year.
