General Information

THE SCHOOL DAY

The school day begins at 8.54 a.m. every day with a roll call /tutorial except Tuesdays when school begins at 8.47a.m. This lasts 20 minutes and private reading or unfinished homework should be done during this time. If students arrive at school after this time they report to the front office. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays school finishes at 3.10 p.m. On Thursday school finishes at 2.33 p.m. There is also compulsory school sport for Years 7 to 10 on Tuesday afternoons.

BELL TIMES

The normal school day is divided into 8 periods which consist of approximately 80 minute lessons (double periods) or 40 minute lessons (single periods). Recess is 20 minutes, after period 2 (10.28 a.m. -10.48 a.m.). Lunch is for 40 minutes (1.16 p.m. - 1.56 p.m.).

ASSEMBLY

Every Monday there is a full school assembly in the gym. Students line up in their roll call groups. During this time students are given information by various people and at times awards are given out. Sometimes there is a guest speaker who will inform the students of special upcoming events. Assemblies usually last 20 minutes and then students go to their period 1 class.

ABSENCE FROM AND LATENESS TO SCHOOL

Students are allowed to be absent from school only for illness. Exemptions may be given by the Principal for exceptional reasons. If your child is going to be away from school for more than 2 days please contact the school. The school will contact you if a pattern of absence appears. When your child returns to school after being absent a note explaining their absence is required. This note can be written in English or your first language. If your child is late to school he/she must report to the front office. A letter from the parent or guardian is required explaining lateness. Students who are persistently late will be placed in the time out room.

LEAVING SCHOOL DURING THE DAY (EARLY LEAVERS)

If students have to leave school before 3.10 p.m. for exceptional circumstances, students must present a note explaining the reason, and present it to the front office by 8.40 a.m. This note is to be addressed to the Principal and outline the following:

· students name and roll class
· date and time that student needs to leave
· the reason for leaving
· parent or guardian signature
· telephone number

NB: approval to leave early must be sought by the Principal or Deputy Principal.

Students are requested not to make appointments during school time if it can be avoided.

COMING FROM OVERSEAS

If your child is of high school age (over 12 years old) and speaks little or no English you should contact an Intensive English Centre where your child will be taught English before entering high school. There are staff at these Centres who can speak your language. Our Centre for this region is:

Wilkins Intensive English Centre

Marrickville ph: 9554-4352

TEXTBOOKS AND EQUIPMENT

Textbooks are provided by the school and given to students on a loan basis. They must be returned at the end of each year. All books should be covered with plastic or contact to prevent damage.

All students from Yrs7-10 are required to have a school bag, a book for each subject, pencil case, 2 pencils, 2 pens, eraser, sharpener and ruler.

Equipment packs are available for all Yr 7 students and can be purchased at the fees office or on the Year 7 Orientation day.

PARENT TEACHER NIGHTS

These nights give parents the opportunity to collect work samples and also a chance to speak with the teachers about the progress of your child. It is desirable that parents attend these nights as it is a good way to support your child’s learning. Interpreters may be arranged in Portuguese, Greek, Vietnamese Mandarin and Cantonese.
