Our History - A timeline from 1882


1882 Petition From 117 residents to Minister for Public Instruction asking for Public School to be granted.
1883 Land from the Seaview Estate purchased for £918.
1884 Wooden school built for £496.
1885 School opened with David Ritchie as teacher — 154 pupils.
1889 Opening of steam tramway to Dulwich Hill.
1893 Stage 1 of two storey building constructed [facing Seaview Street].
1895 Enrolment of 500 pupils.
1897 Separate Infants Department created.
1899 Evening Public School established — later ones 1902-1911, 1913.
1900 600 students.
1901 Extension — Stage 2 of main building erected.
1907 Stage 3 of building completed; enrolment 850.
1910 Enrolment 1,000.
1912 Brick Infants School constructed facing Fairfowl Street.
1913 Domestic Science School (Girls).
Commercial School (Boys) established.
1915 Enrolment 1,500 — ‘somewhat crowded’ site.
1919 New brick building constructed (Block G).
1922 Dulwich Hill Old Girls Union offered to raise £2,000 to purchase more land.‘Congestion at Dulwich Hill school deplorable’ (Inspector).
1925 Department and Trinity Grammar School swapped landDepartment gave Trinity 17 acres at Hurlstone site.Trinity gave Department 1 acre site on corner of New Canterbury Road & Toothill Street, plus £13,000. (Site now Lewisham Public School).Girls moved to old Trinity Grammar site.

1947 Domestic Science Department made separate school — Dulwich Hill Home Science School.
1948 Commercial Department became Junior Technical School.
1962 Name of Toothill Street changed to Girls Junior High School.
1965 Dulwich Hill Public School closed. Pupils merged with Petersham Public to form Lewisham Public at Toothill Street.
1966 Name changed to Dulwich High School.
1975 Dulwich Hill Public School established at Kintore Street.
1994 Dulwich High — multicultural high school.
2000 School threatened with closure because of declining enrolments (320 students) or amalgamation with Marrickville High School under the auspices of the NSW Government’s ‘Building the Future’ program.
2001 School community protested about possible closure and/or amalgamation.
2002 As a result of a protracted and often bitter campaign by the Dulwich community, the NSW Government agreed to maintain Dulwich High as Dulwich High School of Visual Arts and Design.
2004 $1.5 million Visual Arts and Design building completed.
2005 Refurbishments to heritage building completed and Inner Sydney Skills Centre opened.
