Extra Curricular Activities

BASKETBALL

DHSVAD runs a number of basketball teams in the Sydney Comets Association Weekend Competition.

The school provides the shirts and students may buy the basketball shorts for the Saturday competition. Games for this competition usually take place at the stadium in Maddox Street, Alexandria on Saturdays.

The Competition is registered by the NSW Basketball Association and the draws and results are published. There are teams for both boys and girls in a variety of age groups.

DEBATING AT DHSVAD

Debating teams are up and running at DHSVAD. Both the junior and the senior teams compete in the Commonwealth Bank Debating Competition. Debating will be introduced for all students in Years 7-10 in workshops in Term III and IV.

CULTURAL PROGRAMS

Aboriginal Cultural Group: DHSVAD has a community of Aboriginal students from as many as 12 different language groups. The Aboriginal community has an active involvement with the school.

Members of the Committee meet regularly to organise different activities for Aboriginal students and increase awareness throughout the school. We currently have aboriginal mentor - Monica Stevens.

SCHOOL BAND & CHOIR

15 students from Years 7-10 participate in the school band under the stewardship of professional bandmaster Gareth Lewis. The band is basically a brass, woodwind and percussion combination that swings to movie themes and jazz arrangements. In 2005 DHSVAD started a school choir.

DESIGN AND MAKE CLUB

The Design & Make Club operates one afternoon each week after school to give keen design students an opportunity to design and make indiviually directed projects. They use resources of the TAS workshops under the guidance of the teaching staff of Ms. L. Trott and Mr W. Wyndham. Students gain valuable practical skills working with a range of tools. The materials they work with include timber, perpex, metal and recycled materials. The club builds upon skills and knowledge gain in TAS subjects and provides valuable opportunity for motivated students.

The Design and Make is open to all students. There is a limit of 20 students per term. Permission notes go out to students at the start of the term. Parent involvement is encouraged.

VISUAL ARTS WORKSHOPS

After-school Visual Arts workshops are available for DHSVAD students. The Street Art Club is an example of these workshops. This group meets one afternoon per week and is funded by the Attorney-General's Department through Marrickville Council. It enables students of all Years to work with skilled artists to develop design and painting skills, including major murals in the local area. Members of the Club painted designs and murals on a truck used by the Reverse Garbage Centre, on the Dulwich Hill Early Childhood Centre & Reiby’s Cafe in Marrickville.

The School Magazine Club meets regularly after school. Students learn design, photography and editorial skills.
