Post Compulsory Option

Post Compulsory Education is about education for employment which begins at DHSVAD after Year 10. Until then, a general education is compulsory for all students with some choice between subjects.

Traditionally the way students progressed from school to work was by completing Years 11 -12 and gaining a U.A.I (University Admission Index) to gain admission to a university. After their training the students would gain a satisfactory job on graduating.

Research on students leaving school indicates that only a small number of students (about 30%) actually progress along this traditional pathway to a successful career. Many students and many of the greatest achievers followed a very different pathway to career success after school. Many completed TAFE courses in which they acquired valuable employment skills while others completed apprenticeships or traineeships which involve on the job training -the fastest growing area of training in Australia.

DHSVAD has always enjoyed considerable success in preparing those students wanting to go to university, however, many of our most successful students established their careers without going to university. In the past, students wishing to move directly from school to the workplace have felt left out as they stayed on longer at school to get an HSC. This was because many courses were designed to improve the students chances of getting to university. Now there is the opportunity to complete a training course at school.

In response to the needs of this majority of students, DHSVAD developed a number of vocation or job based courses which were designed around structured industry workplacements. Our students must work 5 days each year in work placements. We worked closely with industry bodies to design courses and train our teachers to deliver these courses of study with industry accreditation.

The school currently offers the following courses for our senior students:

· Retail
· Hospitality
· Construction
· Information Technology
· Business Services Administration

These courses are recognised by the National Training Framework leading to Certificate 1 or 2. Our aim is to assist students and make them competent to begin work and training in that industry. We have become one of the first schools in NSW to offer such a comprehensive range of vocational studies, as well as be a pilot school for the Department of School Education as it moves to develop other similar courses.

The Post Compulsory Education program at DHSVAD can provide our current and our future students, a competitive edge in tomorrow’s workplace.
